Anatomy: Medical Term vs Lay Term!

Lots of students say they learn lots of anatomy in medical school in English, and do well in their exams. However, when they need to speak to real English-speaking patients they don’t have the correct words!

Check out this list of medical terminology and the “lay” (i.e. non-medical) word to use with your patients:

  • larynx = voice box
  • trachea = wind pipe
  • axilla = armpit/underarm
  • abdomen = tummy/belly
  • oesophagus = food pipe
  • duodenum, jejunum, ileum = small intestine
  • colon = large intestine
  • scapula = shoulder blade
  • sternum = breastbone
  • clavicle = collar bone
  • spine = backbone
  • coccyx = tailbone
  • pelvis = hip bone
  • femur = thigh bone
